Anyone into car audio? What have you added or modified? I love the head unit on the vehicle but I think it lacks serious bass :( Not sure if I want to upgrade the door speakers / components or add a sub.

Whats everyone done?

I was thinking of upgrading the door speakers and adding a sub-box in the back. Ordering from Crutchfield of course. May need an amp to power them as the head unit won't hack it I bet.

I think the head unit may be stronger than what you think for door speakers. Now a sub box not so much def going to need an amp for that one.
Idea from Youtube for sub install.

I added 4 new 6.5" Polk speakers, but the OEM head unit is just way too underpowered for them to make a difference.
So I added the Kicker Key 200.4 amplifier - It puts out 50W RMS x 4, and has a self-tuning DSP. Adding the amp to the speakers made a HUGE difference.

A few tips I can offer:

  1. Definitely add an amplifier. If you aren't sure, there's no reason you can't do the speakers first to see if you're happy and then add the amp if you aren't. But I can tell you it makes a huge difference. The Venue is a small car with 4 x 6.5" speakers, which is a decent size. Also, the Venue has a solid plastic vapor barrier behind the door panels, not just those crappy sheets of plastic. This seals the airspace inside the door, not completely of course, but a lot. I think it really contributes to the amount of bass you can squeeze out of it. If you put some quality speakers in your doors and give them enough power, you may be surprised at how good they can sound. It's not going to rattle windows from a block away, but if you are just looking for some good sound with sufficient low-end, you might forget about needing a subwoofer at all.

  2. Like many other Hyundais I have read about, the sound from the OEM head unit to the rear channels is noticeably muted or otherwise EQ'd in some way. Seriously, try fading your audio all the way front to all the way back if you don't believe me. I ended up just running the two front channels to the front and back inputs of my amp, so that all four speakers would have full sound. My fader controls no longer work, but I don't care because I kept them balanced all the time anyways. Plus the DSP on my amp provides time-correction, so the sound is already perfectly centered without having to adjust anything.

  3. The guy in the video posted by @imaddicted2u uses the remote turn-on wire to a 12v source in the fuse box that is on/off with the ignition. Don't do it this way. You know how your stereo will play after you take the key out of the ignition for a few minutes (or until you open the door)? Well his install method will shut the amp off as soon as you turn the car off. Your head unit will still be on, but there won't be any sound. I looked everywhere for a 12v source that was on/off with the head unit, but came to the conclusion that there isn't one

Instead, get an amp that has signal sensing, which means it turns itself on/off based on when there is voltage on the speaker wires. It doesn't need a separate 12v switched lead. Most amps these days have this feature already anyways. Your amp will stay powered-on about 2-3 minutes after your head unit shuts off. For some reason, it waits a few minutes before completely cutting power to the speaker wires. This threw me for a loop at first, because I expected the voltage to drop as soon as the head unit stopped playing.

I bought this set for the front. On sale for a screaming deal right now. Haven't installed it yet. One of the few sets where both woofer and tweeter fit. With most of the sets the tweeter is too thick. The JBLs are also supposed to be more efficient, ie higher volume from the base amp compared to others.

Nice. Are you going to add an amp or just run from the HU?

Nice write up man. I didn't even know they made those types of amps. I really didn't want to get into running wires and popping off panels. Feels like every piece of plastic you try to get into on this car something breaks. Hell I changed a side marker bulb and the clip broke on the lens. Took it to Hyundai ended up having to buy a new lense because I changed it myself. It wasn't expensive just annoying as hell.

Sorry I tried to reply to this yesterday but it wouldn't let me quote it think it was too long or something

I'm going to start with front speakers only. Then if I like what I hear, I might replace the back speakers. I am unlikely to add an amp, but we'll see.
