Best Cargo Bag for Venue with just roof racks and no crossbars

2822 Views 22 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  justin1138
Going on a trek from BC back to Saskatchewan for a while, was wanting some extra space so looking at roof cargo bags. Anyone bought any? 18cu ft or less? Lots on Amazon just looking to see if anyone has tried any? any aerodynamic ones?

Saw it on the site, and it looks good. Might kill fuel economy at 60+

Ended up ordering this as will be here in a day. Will update after my trip.

Wanted this one https://amzn.to/3u3Y8ua

But wouldn't come in time.
Keep us up to date on how it works out.
Terrifying thought: drug runners using the carriers because no one ever looks at a Venue.
You can get crossbars off Amazon for like $90 CAD or so. I am going to order me some. Also, I am getting a hitch installed soon. They are only about $200 CAD. With a hitch and a small utility trailer, you can haul a lot.

Venue tows about 800 kilograms. My 2011 Focus with a larger engine (2.0) only towed about 250 kilograms. I imagine it's due to the Venue having a CVT instead of a regular tranny with clutch discs and all the other moving parts.

Well got back from 1700KM trek from Chilliwack to Saskatoon. Hit high winds from Edmonton on so gas millage degraded a lot. usually get 6-6.5l/100km in the mountains but was getting 8-9 then with head on winds was 10-11l/100km. the bag was good but not very aerodynamic. the front has no zipper but they put a lip in front like they do over the zipper and it was more of an air catcher so was adding to the drag. Heavy duty fabric and zipper but think i would get this one next time... https://amzn.to/3EokfjD. These venues with the floor dropped in the back hold a ton of stuff... Love my galactic grey.. Bought in BC. registered in Sask. Next to buy the cross bars.

I called the dealer in Abbotsford as wanted to buy a utility trailer instead of the cargo bag. He said can only be used for bike rack. no towing.... Guess should have said for bikes.... Goin to do the same now back in Sask and have a garage to do the work. will grab a tow package for my bike...wink wink...

I think you might be sorry if you "...wink wink..." tow with it. Cargo carrying capacity is quite low. I would think the computer stores maximum transmission and engine load calculations.

Where did you find info that says Venue can tow 800 kilograms? The manual says no towing and the max passengers plus cargo carrying capacity is 380 kg or 838 pounds.

I read it online before buying my Venue, but I guess it's incorrect. :( I still wouldn't mind towing a small utility trailer if I had to. It's all flat land around here. Let's say I need to take my push mower or smaller garden tractor over to a relative's house to mow. The trailer is 300 pounds or so and another 100-200 pounds for the mower so about 230 kilograms.

I don't think that'd hurt the car.

Yep, I am buying the cross bars too in a month or so. I've already hauled 2-3 mattresses atop my Venue for daughter. I wasn't worried about scratching the roof too much as they were the top mattresses and one time a box spring (I balanced it atop the rails and roped it down).

I am amazed that I see more Accent and Rio sedans around than Venues, with hatchbacks/crossovers/SUVs being more practical. So much more utility and space with a hatchback. I think in a year or 2, the Venue/Kicks type small hatches will take over the small sedans. I almost bought a Kia Rio hatchback before I fell in love with the Venue. They had like 5 RIo sedans on the lot and only one hatch.

It would've been cheaper. I think it was $17,100 for the Rio hatch compared to the Venue SE at $19k. Though I ended up paying $2k more for the SEL.

The stated Venue total cargo capacity is 380kg. Subtract the actual weight of passengers and any cargo inside or on top of the vehicle from 380kg and that's the cargo capacity you have left. You might get away with towing, you might not.

Can the dealer tell if you've overloaded the vehicle? I wouldn't think so. Even if the tranny stores the load it thinks you were carrying or pulling. Though I probably won't risk getting the warranty voided. I will just put a hitch on the GF's 2006 Saturn Aura sedan (has a V6). lol

And this says 1780 pounds...lol.
I'd stick with what Hyundai manual states. Go read the tire placard on your own venue. It's your car, take a chance if you want.
I'll bet there are parameters in the engine and transmission computers that can tell Hyundai is the vehicle was overloaded.

LOL, my old car was a 2008 Saturn Aura XE. Loved that car but love the Venue more. Easier on the wallet.
