IVT transmission update?

2018 Views 36 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  imaddicted2u
Down at the dealership for an inspection and seatbelt recall and the service dept has informed me there is a transmission software update for the ivt.
Has anyone had this done and did you notice a change in the mannerism of the ivt after? Guess we will see if I’m the Guinea pig on this one.✌🏼

I think they got too cute with the whole sport mode thing myself brother.
Snow mode…hell to the yes!
Sport mode is kinda useless, unless you find yourself on a road where you will be under 30-40 mph. It just wants to get to that last ratio too quick in normal. (Bog)
Now on a flat road with is 👍🏼
But incorporate some grading, and I just find myself in that last ratio, bogged down at 1700 where it should have never got to yet. I mean yay gas mileage, but personally I would give up 1mpg for longer changes, producing more torque like sport mode does.🤷🏼‍♂️
Better for the engine too.

I think I turned on sport mode once, but used snow mode a lot!
Snowmode is badass!
But that's the whole reason TSB's exist. To rectify potential problems.
Every auto manufacturer has TSBs. No manufacturer I've dealt with ever notified me of TSBs. I do think it would be preferable to get a notification, but they don't appear to do that.
@mayo was in the service department for the seatbelt recall and was then informed of TSB 23-01-019H issued in March of 2023. @mayo would not have found out about it until it appeared on one of the TSB search sites (it's not there yet).
According to the TSB text...right or wrong, this is how they handle open TSBs inside Hyundai.

TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for All Years, Makes and Models is one site where TSBs can be looked up for the major manufacturers but I'm not sure how up to date it is as TSB 23-01-019H is not listed yet. At the bottom of the page, put in your Camaro and see how many TSBs were issued.
Not ideal but If I was changing my own oil, I would ask the service department periodically if there are any open TSBs associated with my VIN.
FYI, info I got from another forum indicates the TSB # 23-01-019H is a USA number and TSB numbers in Canada, probably other countries too, use a different numbering system. I'll check with my dealer next week and if I get a number for Canada, I'll post it.
Just stopped in at my dealer, there is a Canadian TSB for the IVT. I didn't get the Canadian TSB number yet. At first the service adviser said it didn't apply to my vehicle. I made him look it up and he came back and said, yes, it is open for your car, then he scheduled it for next Wednesday when they do the oil change and pre-tensioner recall.

did they say what model year it's for...my IVT is working great and I'm a believer of if it ain't broke don't fix it...what would be interesting is exactly what is the fix for and what will I notice the difference, if anything...I'm a big believer especially when it comes to software/firmware changes because that's what I did on my job before retiring, and I spent many, many, long hours fixing and making things right after making changes and I had thousands of customers please...granted much of it was needed and made things better...there were times when I worked much more then 24 hours straight and more getting everything back up and running...many changes I made were first done by the companies in their lab environment and didn't always work the same in the real world environment.

I'm not downing the changes, just being cautious, some what like waiting for the next year for an entirely new model before buying it, and let someone else find the problems first.
Totally up to you whether you get the update. At this point you won't know if it applies to your Venue unless you check with a dealer.
I'm getting it done. I don't care if I will feel it or not. My take on it is, Hyundai would not be putting out an update and paying the dealer to install it if it wasn't fixing something that might prevent an IVT failure which is far more costly for them. Hyundai and Kia have been fine tuning the ITV controls by putting out software updates since IVTs came out and started blowing up in 2020 Kia Soul's.
I think the update will be a refinement based on what they deemed to be the root causes of past failures from the various models the IVT is installed in, after they were shipped back to Korea and they were disassembled for post mortem.
It may be a fix for a situation that may randomly happen under a specific set of circumstances which might be hurtful to the IVT. For instance, something I've noticed a couple of times, driving along, on cruise control, going down a slight grade at about 50kmh, the IVT suddenly downshifted and the rpm's shot up from 1500 to about 3500 and the car slowed dramatically, a couple of seconds later it up shifted and rpm's dropped back to 1500. I mentioned it to a tech that was at the counter and he said that's the sort of thing that updates could fix but he didn't have any knowledge about what the update does specifically.

Got the IVT software update done today, too soon to tell if any difference can be felt.
For Canadian's that might want to check if this applies to their Venue...the Canadian campaign number on the invoice is C0501 Venue (QX) TCU upgrade & IVT replacement.
I generally drive in normal mode and I can't say that I've felt a simulated shift, just feel a steady pull since I had the IVT software update, unless I tromp on it when merging on the highway and then ratio kicks down and seems snappier. There seems to be better all around throttle response and I think I feel more engine braking when slowing down.
That's my short term take on it. If you've had the update done, please post your thoughts on it...

is this update for the 2022 as well as the previous model years...I haven't been around to the dealership to find out because they're about 30 miles away...the reason I ask is I too 99.99% use normal mode and what your describing is what my 2022 feels like...this is why when i got my 2022 and waited till the break in period was up to try the power fully I found my Venue had more then enough amount of power during normal acceleration and even more when putting the hammer down to pass, and I now have over 8000 kilometers on my Venue and it feels even better and as well over the last while with the winter weather I could feel the engine braking when slowing down which I thought this is good.

now this is the first new vehicle I have in 20 years and the first automatic in about 25 years and the engine braking you talk about is a first for me so I don't know if automatics now all have engine braking or is it just common with IVT type transmissions, and I love the transmission, it's so smooth and quiet which in the reviews by many people that I followed, they complained about the transmission.

one of these days I'll probably drive over to the dealership to ask about the update, but I'm wondering if since my 22 Venue wasn't built till about the latter part of May 22 that mine came with the updated IVT especially since I can't understand what the reviewers of the Venue had to say about the Venue's lack of power and transmission problems?

You may be ok, this is what the TSB says...
Applicable Vehicles:
Certain 2020-22MY Venue (QX) equipped with IVT and produced from 9/17/2019 – 10/20/2021.
You can find your production date on a sticker placed on the driver door post.
Was just at the dealer for oil change etc..... never mentioned anything about this....2022 venue limited.

Check your invoice, not likely but maybe they did the update and didn't mention it. It's possible the update doesn't apply to your 2022 if the production date is after 10/20/2021. Check the sticker on the driver door post. You could also ask the dealer to look for open TSBs they are supposed to check the system at every service visit but maybe they didn't.
I didn't see any mention of the IVT firmware upgrade when the wife took her car in for the first oil change, but I do notice there is not as much transmission braking when you let off the gas when coasting to a stop. I find myself having to brake a bit harder so I don't roll out into the intersection.

I had the update, I think I feel more engine braking. Chances are the update was not done, Hyundai wouldn't pay the dealer for doing it id it wasn't on the invoice. You may not need the update, check your manufacturing date on the driver door post. The dealers are supposed to check for open TSBs at every visit. If your Venue was made between produced from 9/17/2019 – 10/20/2021 then you should ask your dealer to check for the TSB.
