I have a new 2020 venue sel. The rear defroster does not turn on when there is frost or ice on the glass. When the car warms up a bit the defrost button lites up. The second part of this when it is cold and no snow on ice the button goes on.Why??

You can push the defroster buttons manually.
I don't think it turns on automatically. Never recalled it doing that to mine.

There is also a cycle button, but that only turns on the front.

The rear defrost will go on after i drive for a mile or two. When the car warms up a bit. First thing in the cold morning it does not. Is there a thermo cupuler where the window is?
Mine turns on when I push the button, and turns off when I push it again, as God intended. But I have the bottom-tier SE model, so yours might be different.

Mine does the same thing. I start it with the remote start and let it run 10 minutes (because that's all it will run, which is a pain) and can drive another 5-7 minutes before my rear defrost light comes on. Also don't have any heat for a good 15-20 minutes.

Do you leave it on Auto Climate Control?
I always have it on manual mode so it never does weird things like that.
I might need to test it out.

I would do the same thing. I don't like my car thinking it is smarter than I am. If I had an auto climate control, I would disable it, too. I want things to come on when I tell them to come on.
Mine does the same. 2020 Venue SEL. When the temp is below freezing in the morning, the rear defroster will not come on when you push the rear defroster button. After the car warms up the rear defroster will turn on with a push of the button. The dealer says they cannot find the problem, it works for them. I'm tired of little things not working on this car.
If your rear will not come on when the car is running by pressing the button, you have a problem. Mine will turn on anytime no matter how cold.

Yup, that's my point. It's a problem and the dealer "techs" deny that it's happening.
Only way they will find that issue is to leave it overnight so they can see it happening in the morning under the right conditions by their own eyes. My guess is that the rear defogger relay doesn't quite make contact when cold but works fine once the cabin starts to warm up. The heated mirrors are are turned on by the same relay.

My 2021 Preferred model throws heat pretty quickly after the engine starts. It has an electric heater that kicks in right away when the engine starts. I thought it was standard on all northern climate models. I sure wouldn't be happy waiting so long to get warm. To see if you have the PTC heater, look in the under hood fuse box, there should be a PTC fuse and relay. If they are there and the fuse is not blown the PTC heater may be broken. Report it to the dealer. You should be feeling warm air within a minute or two and long before the engine warms up.

I wonder if there could be a connection between the defrost issue and some horns not working when cold. I bet they use the same type of relay for both, maybe Hyundai got a bunch from their supplier that are sensitive to working when cold.

For Sure. Been there, done that. they claim there's no issue. I believe it's a case of LAZY or I Don't Care Diagnosis. I left it overnight. It was 20 degrees the morning they had it overnight for the diagnosis and they missed the ball completely. Luckily I can take it elsewhere - there are a few Hyundai dealers near me. It's making me like the car less. First I'm going to see about the relay myself.
Here's the defroster schematic. Might be helpful. There's a misprint where the wire to the rear defogger doesn't show up like the others. I haven't found the relay. Maybe on the back side of the fuse block. There is no legend that shows the relay location.

COOL! Thanks
my 2022 Ultimate rear defrost only comes on when I push the on/off button for it, except when I use my blue link remote start where I can have both front and rear defrost come on as well as the auto climate control when I remotely start the car which is the way I have it programed for the winter and of course during the warm/hot seasons I have the auto climate control set to a temp. where air conditioning comes on, and with the remote settings I also set how many minutes for it to run.

Because I have the heated mirrors the rear defrost button also turns on the mirror heaters so with the rear defrost set to come on and the front defrost, any ice on my mirrors will be cleared.

Now I suspect that if you don't have the blue link and are just using you key fob to start your car, that before you shut off your car and if you were to have your defrost buttons turned on and just shut off the car, I wonder when you were to start your car with your key fob, the defrosters may come on because you left them in the on position...it's worth a try.

My auto climate control will automatically defrost the front window without me pushing the front defrost on and off button.

below are the preconditions that are in my blue link info...I don't know what the preconditions would be just using the key fob...they are probably in the manual and I confess I've never looked them up because I have the blue link and have only used the key fob once to start the car the first day I got it just to try it out.

Preconditions :
  • All doors must be closed and locked using key fob or remote door lock option.
  • The hood and trunk must both be closed.
  • Vehicle transmission is in P (Park).
  • Ignition must be in OFF position.
  • Depending on vehicle model and year, the vehicle must have been started within the last 96 or 168 hours.

I have the same make and model. From virtually the day I got the car, my rear defroster would not work when it was below 20° outside. Light wouldn't go on, defroster wouldn't get warm, ice wouldn't melt. They replaced the back glass thinking perhaps the gradient was cracked. They also replaced some kind of a relay switch, and did a whole myriad of things working with Hyundai engineers. Eventually they replaced the instrument cluster and that solved the problem.
