My wife averages 27-28 MPG around town -- we use the Fuelly app to track our mileage. Mileage will vary depending on how heavy your foot is taking off from a stop, as well as living where they sell "winter" fuel, which gets worse mileage. They just switched to summer fuel here, and the mileage on my Toyota went from 32 to 35-36.

 

When I first got my Venue three years ago, I did a lot of "old school" MPG calculations, and they agreed very well with the onboard computer. Generally I get around 20 MPG around town (I drive like an asshole, never shifting until long after it thinks I should; I love the acceleration), but I get around 42 MPG on the highway. I've very satisfied.

My opinion on "breaking in" a new engine - as a professional engineer, I think that may have been relevant decades ago, but with modern manufacturing technology, there is no need for it.

 

And the manual says:

 

With the way my wife drives the Venue she will have no problem breaking in the engine.

 

I've found the 1.6L Smartstream engine to be very fuel efficient. The 2 fuel injectors per cylinder helps atomize the gas for a better burn but how much fuel you use is heavily dependent on your driving style. I use cruise control whenever I can and use the +/- buttons on the steering wheel to maintain speed with traffic. The onboard fuel economy calculation seems to be quite accurate against hand calculations. Warming up the engine in winter conditions and city driving hurt fuel economy in any car. I find I get best numbers from late April to November. Best I've recorded is around 42 mpg.

 

The 2 fuel injectors per cylinder was the first thing I noticed when I popped the hood to look at the engine. Interesting for sure.

 

Engine breaks in rather quick. About 5k.
Ivt took alittle longer. At 10k both felt as good as it gets.
29-30 city
40+ highway

 

While there is no specific "breaking in" procedure recommended by Hyundai that I am aware of, I have always stuck to the mantra that your first 1,000 miles or so should be at varied speeds and rpm (i.e. don't immediately hop on the highway and set the cruise control, but instead engage in mixed driving).

That may be useless advice in a modern car, as some others have commented, but I definitely recommend changing the oil at the 5K odometer reading for the first oil change, and then at 10K for the second. You can decide if you want the third to be at 15K or 20K, but the 10K interval recommended by Hyundai for these early oil changes is too long, in my opinion.

Finally, I recommend using the free Hyundai services for these first oil changes in which they will use a synthetic blend, but when you transition to the 10K interval I recommend using full synthetic.

 

The Hyundai break-in process is detailed in the owners manual on page 1-7. I posted a snip of it above. You pretty much nailed their recommendation.
The Hyundai recommended engine lubricant is Quaker State 0W20 Full Synthetic and that's what my dealer puts in, probably all do. However any API SN PLUS (or above) Full synthetic engine oil is deemed acceptable. See Page 2-11.
Most drivers tend to meet the severe driving conditions detailed on page 8-11. This puts oil changes at every 6 months or 5000 miles. Hyundai "free" maintenance only pays for "Normal Duty" oil changes every 12 months or 8000 miles.
Up here in Canada there is no free maintenance and our cars are put in the severe duty category out of the gate with oil change schedule of 6 months or 5000 miles.

 

We bought our 2023 Limited the end of November, 2022 and I followed the recommended break in procedure. My mpg improved substantially over the four months we've owned it. We are consistently averaging 39.9 mpg. Needless to say we are super pleased with our Venue.

 

I have been getting mid 35-45 mpg everywhere. Car is great on as. If I had 25 I would make a dealer appointment. There is a graph on the dash that tells real time mpg. She if you are driving some way to cause low mpg like abrupt starts.

shoukd get much more. Like 35-45 mpg. Check mpg bar on dash and if not abruptly starting there may be a priblem.

 

45 mpg? We shall see. In another forum a lady said she was getting 53 mpg. No,I don't think so.

 

I had a neighbor, always telling me his Honda CRV got the best fuel economy. So, I fixed him. Knowing how the Venue calculated fuel economy, I knew there was a period of time after a fill up before there was enough data collected to reflect a true average economy. I filled up at the highest gas station in town and coasted down to the bottom of the hill, pulled over and took a pic. Next time he bragged, I showed him the pic, he said, what the hell, are you running on fumes! I said, Yeah, I guess I am...lol. He has never once bragged about his CRVs fuel economy since...lol.
